Preventing Frozen Pipes in North Texas

Local plumbing is built for heat, not cold. A few hours below freezing is enough to cause damage.

Before the freeze

Disconnect hoses — a connected hose keeps water at the bib where it can freeze and split the valve behind the wall. Cover outdoor faucets with insulated caps and insulate any pipe running through the attic or an exterior wall.

During the freeze

Let a fixture on an exterior wall drip, open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air reach the pipe, and keep the house at a steady temperature rather than setting back at night.

If a line freezes

Open the faucet the line feeds so melting water has somewhere to go, then warm the area with a hair dryer or space heater kept away from anything flammable. Never use an open flame. If pressure returns with no flow at all, or you hear water running once it thaws, shut off the main.
